The Model

Kevin Roche, Richard Lee, and John McDevitt with model of tower

Architect Kevin Roche pointed to a model of the tower, the new headquarters for the Knights of Columbus—known as the “Supreme Office Building” by the Knights—as New Haven Mayor Richard C. Lee and John McDevitt, the Supreme Knight, looked on.  The model looked almost like a child’s rendering of an elongated medieval fortress:  four massive cylindrical posts supported long spans of structural steel that were hung between them.  The twenty-six floors (there would ultimately be twenty-three) seemed to sit on a glass cube (it was projected to house the branch of a local bank).
